What is Sodium Methylate?

Sodium Methylate is a versatile intermediate used in a variety of organic syntheses. The compound can be made by reacting elemental sodium with methyl alcohol, and it is also commercially produced from sodium chloride and methanol in an electrolytic process under inert gas.  This catalyst is shipped in a methanol solution, allowing Biodiesel producers to reduce their overall consumption of methanol while providing a water-free catalyst.

Why Methylate?

In recent years, Sodium and Potassium Methylate have become the catalyst of choice for many Biodiesel producers around the world.  Sodium and Potassium Methylate functions as a catalyst to accelerate the chemical reactions in the Biodiesel by reducing the energy needed to initiate the reaction.  It is successfully used in large-scale production facilities for all major feedstocks like virgin vegetable oils, animal fat and/or yellow grease.

What are the Advantages of Using Methylate?

The major advantage of Sodium and Potassium Methylate is the virtually water-free characteristic of the catalyst solution. This results in higher yields, lower purification costs and more consistent Biodiesel quality. When mixing traditional hydroxides with methanol, hazardous solid handling is inevitable, and as a result, water is generated that will initiate unwanted side reactions.water_drop.jpg

Since feedstock costs of the vegetable oil or other triglyceride sources account for most of the variable cost of Biodiesel production (up to 90 percent), a higher yield of a few percent usually translates into substantial savings that more than compensate for the higher catalyst cost.
